Kyle Brodziak after the Sharks (11th Jan 19 at 2:47am UTC)
The Philadelphia Flyers appear ready to make a goaltending change Wednesday when they visit the Buffalo Sabres www.officialbluejackets.com , who are going so well they just want things to stay just the way they are. While indications on Tuesday were that Alex Lyon, who played in 11 NHL games last season, would make his season debut for the Flyers in the game at KeyBank Center, the Sabres will be trying to extend their winning streak to seven games.Buffalo scored four straight goals, capped by team captain Jack Eichel’s overtime winner Monday night in a comeback 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.Article continues below ...It was the third comeback win on a three-game road trip for the Sabres (13-6-2), who are on a six-game winning streak for the first time since Dec. 27, 2009-Jan. 8, 2010.“There’s a bit of confidence now because we’ve done it a few times,” Eichel said after the game. “I think it’s a trust and a belief in each other. You look at the room, I think the guys are believing the next guy’s going to get the job done and set you up for your shifts.“We’re a pretty tight bunch right now for how many new guys have come into this team. I think we’re getting really close right now and we’re doing it for each other, and I think that’s the biggest thing. Everyone out there doesn’t want to let the guy next to them down.”The Sabres also defeated the Winnipeg Jets and the Minnesota Wild on the trip.“I thought that was a heck of a road trip against three really good hockey teams Columbus Blue Jackets T-Shirts Authentic ,” Eichel said. The Flyers (9-9-2) have not played since losing 6-5 in overtime at home Saturday to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Flyers, who scored four goals in the third period to force overtime Saturday, finished the homestand at 2-2-1.With injuries to goaltenders Brian Elliott and Michal Neuvirth, Cal Pickard was in goal Saturday for the Flyers. In eight appearances, Pickard has a 4.60 goals-against average and an .852 save percentage.Lyon, 25, who was recalled last week from the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL, left the ice first at practice Tuesday, an indication that he will start in Buffalo, although Flyers coach Dave Hakstol did not reveal his choice.“We’ve probably generated more offense over the past three games than we had in the previous five games,” Hakstol said. “The opportunities are coming. We weren’t able to finish. We’ve talked about different things we can do a little better — simplifying thing Columbus Blue Jackets Hoodies Authentic , making sure we’re getting to the net. To have the floodgates open in the third period the other night was needed and was a good thing for us. I hope we’ll be able to keep generating opportunities, and obviously the most important thing is to continue to finish.”The Flyers have a 104-83 advantage in shots on goal over the past three games but have been outscored 11-6.“I’ve prepared the right way,” Lyon said.“I’m just sticking to the same game plan. I just tried to go out and have a really good practice (Tuesday), and whenever the situation may call, I’ll be ready for it.”The Flyers will need to be at their best against the surging Sabres.“They’re a good team,” Flyers center Sean Couturier said. “They’re streaking right now. They’ve got a lot of talent, a lot of skill. It’s going to be a tough game, a big challenge. We’ll be ready.”If goaltending is a question for the Flyers, the Sabres have had good work from their goalie, Carter Hutton, who stopped 36 of 40 shots on Monday Columbus Blue Jackets Hats Authentic , including an important save when the Penguins had a two-on-none chance during a Sabres power play in the first period.Hutton also made a big save on Phil Kessel during a 29-second spell in the second period when Pittsburgh had a five-on-three power play.“I think the key moment of the game, obviously, was the five-on-three,” Sabres coach Phil Housley said. The Sabres have won five games when trailing after two periods, a league best.“It’s just unbelievable, the resiliency,” Housley said. “This road trip, it’s tough. It says a lot about this group in there, the character and the fight they showed (Monday).” SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers responded the right way to a wakeup call after coach Todd McLellan was fired just hours before they took the ice.McDavid scored his 100th career goal and set up Leon Draisaitl’s game-winner 51 seconds into overtime to give the Oilers a 4-3 victory against the San Jose Sharks in Ken Hitchcock’s first game as coach Tuesday night.“That’s what it has to be,” McDavid said. “Anytime you bring in a new coach Custom Columbus Blue Jackets Jerseys , that’s kind of the last option I would say before shipping everyone out. This is a chance for us to come together and turn this around.”The Oilers started that process by overcoming three deficits to earn just their second win in eight games.McDavid set up Drake Caggiula’s tying goal early in the third period and then the winner in overtime when his pass ricocheted off defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic before hitting Draisaitl’s skate and trickling past goalie Martin Jones.“I was more worried that it was past my bedtime and I wasn’t going to be able to stay up,” Hitchcock said. “I don’t think I’ve seen a third period all year out West. But for me, we just got better and better as the game went on. We got better in the second; we were really good in the third. We really got on the grind.”Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added a short-handed goal and Mikko Koskinen made 22 saves.Joe Thornton assisted on Marcus Sorensen’s goal in the first period to tie Mario Lemieux for 11th place all-time with his 1,033rd helper. Joonas Donskoi and Logan Couture also scored for San Jose.“Tonight’s a disappointing one because I thought if we had gotten a little bit better effort from everybody, from 20 guys, we should have gotten two points,” coach Peter DeBoer said. “We didn’t have enough participants tonight. We didn’t play well enough for long enough stretches. It wasn’t one or two guys, it was almost everybody.”The Sharks took a 3-2 lead in the final minute of the second period when Couture deked Adam Larsson on the rush and beat Koskinen for his first goal in 11 games. But the Oilers responded early in the third when McDavid set up Caggiula on an odd-man rush for the equalizer less than four minutes into the period.“There are too many odd-man rushes,” Couture said. “It wasn’t horrible tonight. It was better than it has been, but still too many. Especially when you are out there against Connor. You can’t give them that many chances. He’s their best player.”The Hitchcock era got off to a rough start for the Oilers, who allowed a goal in the opening minute when Donskoi was left alone in front of the net after a faceoff win by San Jose. Brent Burns’ shot from the point was stopped by Koskinen www.officialstarsproonline.com , but Donskoi was able to backhand the rebound in.McDavid got the equalizer midway through the period when he beat Burns down the slot to take a feed from Draisaitl and knocked it in for his milestone goal. McDavid reached the mark in his 230th game. Only Wayne Gretzky (145 games), Glenn Anderson (183) and Jari Kurri (214) got there faster for the Oilers.Thornton then reached his milestone later in the period when he fed Sorensen from behind the goal line for a one-timer that beat Koskinen.Edmonton tied the game early in the second when Nugent-Hopkins converted a 2-on-1 off a feed from Kyle Brodziak after the Sharks turned the puck over in the offensive zone on a power play.“Obviously it says something about your team, that you need to start playing better,” Nugent-Hopkins said. “We need to make a push here now. Our last eight or so games haven’t been good enough. I felt tonight we responded well, so we just have to keep that going.”NOTES: McDavid has 31 points, becoming the first Oilers player to reach 30 in 21 or fewer games since Mark Messier did it in 19 games in 1989-90. … Thornton needs seven assists to tie Marcel Dionne for 10th place. … F Tomas Hertl returned to the Sharks lineup after missing two games with a lower-body injury.UP NEXTOilers: Visit the Anaheim Ducks on Friday.Sharks: Host the Vancouver Canucks on Friday.
